Leather, Suede, or Synthetic: Matching Your Care Routine to the Material
The fastest way to damage a good pair of shoes is to clean them the way you'd clean a different pair. Water and a stiff brush that would be perfectly fine on canvas can stain suede permanently. A conditioner meant for leather does nothing useful for a synthetic upper and can leave it greasy. Knowing what your shoe is actually made of, and treating it accordingly, is most of what separates a pair that lasts for years from one that looks tired within months.
Full-grain and top-grain leather
Leather is skin, and like skin it can dry out, crack, and lose its natural oils over time — especially with exposure to heat, water, and repeated flexing. The core routine is simple: wipe off surface dirt with a slightly damp cloth after wear, apply a leather conditioner every twenty to thirty wears (or roughly monthly with regular use) to replace lost oils, and polish periodically to protect the finish and restore shine. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators or car heater vents to dry wet leather, since fast drying is what causes cracking; let leather dry slowly at room temperature, stuffed with paper or a shoe tree to hold its shape.
Suede and nubuck
Suede is leather that's been napped on the flesh side to create a soft, fuzzy texture, and that texture is exactly what makes it fussy: water leaves dark, hard-to-remove stains, and any cleaner with oils will flatten the nap permanently. The right routine is entirely dry. A brass-and-nylon suede brush lifts dirt and restores the nap after it's fully dried from any moisture, a suede eraser or gum block lifts scuffs and light stains, and a water-and-stain protector spray applied when the shoes are new (and reapplied periodically) is the best defence against future spills. If suede does get wet, let it air dry completely before brushing — brushing wet suede just grinds the dirt in deeper.
Synthetic and vegan leather
Synthetic uppers — polyurethane, PVC-based vegan leather, and similar materials — don't have natural oils to replace, so leather conditioner is wasted on them and can leave a sticky residue. They're generally the most water-tolerant of the three: a damp cloth with mild soap handles most dirt, and they don't need the same drying caution as real leather since they don't crack from moisture the same way. Their weak point is different — synthetics can crease sharply and permanently where real leather flexes more forgivingly, and the surface coating can peel or flake with age and UV exposure, which no amount of cleaning reverses.
Canvas and mesh
These are the easiest uppers to clean and the most forgiving of water. A simple water-and-mild-detergent solution, scrubbed gently with a soft brush, handles most sneaker-style canvas and mesh without much risk. The main caution is drying: avoid direct sun or a clothes dryer, both of which can shrink, warp, or discolor the material and the glue holding the sole. Air-dry stuffed with paper towel to hold shape and absorb moisture from the inside.
Building a routine per pair, not per closet
The practical takeaway is to sort your shoes by upper material rather than by how often you wear them. A pair of suede boots and a pair of leather dress shoes worn equally often need genuinely different care on genuinely different schedules — suede wants a dry brush and an occasional protector spray, leather wants conditioner and polish on a longer cycle, and synthetics mostly just want to be kept clean and out of direct sun. Get the material-specific basics right and the rest of shoe care is mostly a matter of consistency: a quick wipe after most wears, and the deeper treatment on whatever interval suits how hard you're on that particular pair.
Patent leather: a special case
Patent leather is real (or bonded) leather finished with a glossy plastic or lacquer coating, and that coating changes the care rules completely. The coating is what gives patent its shine, but it also means conditioner formulated for regular leather does nothing useful — the oils can't reach the hide underneath. Instead, clean patent leather with a soft, barely damp cloth, dry it immediately (standing water can cloud the finish), and buff with a dry microfiber cloth to restore shine rather than applying wax polish, which tends to sit on top of the coating rather than absorb. The coating is also the most vulnerable part: it can crack permanently if the shoe is flexed sharply in cold weather or stored folded, so patent shoes benefit from a shoe tree and a slightly gentler break-in than other leathers.
Working out what your shoe is actually made of
Not every shoe comes with a clear material label, and getting it wrong is how the mismatched-routine mistakes above happen. A few quick checks help: real leather has visible, irregular grain and pores and feels slightly cool and dense; bonded or synthetic "leather" often has a suspiciously uniform texture and a more plastic smell. Suede and nubuck have an obvious soft nap you can brush in different directions to change its shade slightly — a synthetic microsuede imitation usually doesn't show that same directional shading as clearly. When genuinely unsure, check the shoe's care label or manufacturer listing before applying anything, and always test a new product on a small, hidden area first regardless of what you believe the material to be.
Mixed-material uppers
Plenty of shoes combine materials on the same upper — a leather toe cap with a fabric vamp, or a suede body with synthetic overlays — and these need to be treated as multiple small care jobs rather than one. Clean and treat each panel according to its own material, working the more delicate sections (suede, unlacquered leather) first while the shoe is fully dry, and save any water-based cleaning of canvas or mesh sections for last so damp doesn't spread onto a panel that shouldn't get wet. Waterproofing spray is one of the few products that's usually safe to apply across a full mixed-material shoe in one pass, since most sprays are formulated to be neutral on both leather and textile.
How the care intervals actually compare
It helps to see the material-specific schedules side by side rather than as separate advice. A typical leather dress shoe wants a wipe-and-brush roughly every 3 wears, a polish around every 10 wears, and a deeper conditioning pass roughly every 30 wears. Leather boots, which see rougher conditions, shift toward re-waterproofing roughly every 20 wears and conditioning around every 25. Suede sits on a lighter but different rhythm entirely — a nap brush every 3 wears and a protector spray reapplied roughly every 15 — with no polish or conditioner step at all, since neither applies to napped leather. None of these numbers are arbitrary; they come from how quickly each material actually accumulates dirt, dries out, or loses its protective coating, which is also why swapping one material's routine onto another leaves you either over- or under-maintaining the shoe.
Adjusting the routine for weather, by material
Wet and salty conditions stress each material differently, and the seasonal adjustment is worth planning for rather than improvising after the damage is done. Leather exposed to road salt should be wiped with a barely damp cloth as soon as practical — salt left to dry on leather can leave a permanent white stain and, over repeated exposure, dries the material out faster than normal wear would. Suede is the most weather-vulnerable of the group: a water-and-stain protector applied before the season starts is far more effective than trying to treat suede after it's already been rained on, since once water has soaked in, drying and brushing can only do so much to restore the nap. Synthetic uppers tolerate wet weather the best of the group and mostly just need a rinse to remove salt residue, since they don't dry out or stain the way natural materials do. Canvas holds up fine against light rain but should be dried promptly after a real soaking, since a canvas shoe left wet for an extended period is prone to mildew in the lining, not just cosmetic damage on the surface.
Products that genuinely work across materials
Most shoe-care products are material-specific by design, but a handful of items are safe to keep as general-purpose basics regardless of what's in your closet. A silicone or fluoropolymer waterproofing spray is formulated to sit on top of a surface rather than absorb into it, so the same can works reasonably well across leather, suede, and most synthetics — always spot-test first, but it's the closest thing to a universal product in this list. A soft microfiber cloth is genuinely material-agnostic for a quick dry-wipe on anything. Beyond those two, resist the temptation to reach for one product for everything: a leather conditioner used on synthetic, or a suede brush used on smooth leather, wastes the product and does nothing useful for the shoe in front of you. When you're not sure which category a product belongs in, check its label for the material it's formulated for rather than guessing from the packaging alone — it's a ten-second check that avoids an afternoon undoing a mismatched treatment.
