It's easy to assume a shoe only wears out while it's on your foot. In practice, a surprising amount of damage happens sitting in a closet: leather dries out and cracks, moisture breeds mildew, and shoes left slumped without support lose their shape permanently. Good storage habits are one of the cheapest ways to add years to a shoe's life.
Clean before you store, every time
Never put a pair away dirty, even for a short-term stint between wears. Dirt and oils left on a shoe continue to interact with the material while it sits, and salt stains from winter roads or sweat left untreated can set in permanently over weeks of storage. A quick wipe-down and, for leather, a light conditioning pass before the shoe goes back on the shelf takes a couple of minutes and prevents a much bigger cleaning job later.
Shoe trees are doing more than you think
A cedar shoe tree inserted right after wear does three jobs at once: it holds the shoe's shape so creases don't set in permanently, it absorbs residual moisture from the day's wear so the interior dries out rather than staying damp, and cedar specifically releases a mild scent that helps control odor between wears. Leaving a shoe to sit collapsed and slightly damp is one of the fastest ways to both distort its shape and encourage odor-causing bacteria.
Control humidity, not just dust
A closed box on a closet floor might keep dust off, but it can also trap humidity, especially in basements or in climates with real seasonal humidity swings. Signs you have a moisture problem in storage include a musty smell, visible mildew spotting on leather or fabric, or a white, powdery bloom on leather (a common and mostly harmless mold that still signals too much moisture). A small packet of silica gel in each shoe box, and simply choosing a storage spot with reasonable airflow over a sealed, damp corner, prevents most of this.
Support the shape, don't just stack
Storing shoes toe-down in a pile, or stacked on top of each other without support, gradually deforms both the upper and the sole. Shoes stored upright, ideally with a shoe tree or at minimum stuffed with acid-free paper, hold their intended shape far longer. If shelf space is tight, clear stackable bins that keep pairs separated and supported beat a loose pile every time.

A dedicated shoe bag (even a repurposed cotton pillowcase) keeps a pair separate from clothing and lets a little air exchange happen rather than sealing moisture in with everything else. Crumpled acid-free paper is a perfectly reasonable substitute for casual shoes, sneakers, or budget pairs where a fitted tree isn't worth buying, and it does a genuinely good job of soaking up residual moisture. Where paper falls short is shape retention on structured leather shoes: paper holds general volume but doesn't press outward the way a tree does, so a leather dress shoe or boot relying on paper alone over a long storage period is more likely to develop a slight collapse at the vamp than one on a properly shaped tree.
